Mayor Reed feature speaker on march 18 state of the city address

Harrisburg,PA–Harrisburg Mayor Stephen R. Reed will be the featured speaker when the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce hosts its Annual State of the City Address on Wednesday, March18, 1998 at the Ramada Inn on Market Square. The program begins at Noon with lunch followed by the Mayor's address.

Mayor Reed uses the occasion of the State of the City Address to report on the condition of Harrisburg, and to outline his future plans for the city. Reporters will have an opportunity to pose questions to Mayor Reed at a press conference to be held immediately following the program.

Second Landmark Summit Set

Middletown, PA – A second landmark regional summit, involving governmental, private sector, academic and civic leaders, has been set for Tuesday, March 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the campus of Gettysburg College in Adams County.

Harrisburg Mayor Stephen Reed, chair of the eight-county South Central Assembly for Effective Governance, said the day-long event, open to all citizens and local governments, is focused on making formal decisions and determining the action steps for their implementation on a range of significant regional issues including land use, transportation, intergovernmental cooperation and cutting preset and future cost of the public and private sectors through smart planning.

Persons interested in attending the summit must register in advance. The cost is $45 per person and includes all materials, lunch and a closing reception.

 

Whitaker Center Façade Construction Proceeds

Harrisburg, PA – Mayor Stephen R. Reed reported that the westernmost travel lane of the first block of N. Third Street will be closed to traffic beginning Wednesday, March 4, as part of the Whitaker Center for the Science Arts and Education construction project.

Reed said the closure allows for the placement of a large crane by project general contractor Wohlsen Construction that will be used to place the cultural center’s pre-cast façade pieces. The work is expected to take several months.

Reed said the closure may cause minor travel inconveniences and motorists are asked to seek an alternative route or exercise caution when travelling by the affected site.

 

Leadership-Harrisburg Area Offers Community Leadership Symposium

Harrisburg, PA – Leadership-Harrisburg Area, the capital region’s leading leadership training organization, has announced that it will offer a symposium titled Leadership Toolbox II: Building Communities That Work on Saturday, March 21, 1998 at the Wildwood Conference Center located on the campus of Harrisburg Area Community College.

The symposium will begin at 7:45 a.m. and will continue until 3:30 p.m. The cost is $35 per person, including continental breakfast, lunch and resource materials.

The symposium will include workshops that focus on such areas as fund-raising, public relations, managing time, and public speaking. Breakfast Program to Feature Benefit Options for Small Business Owners

Harrisburg, PA – Small business owners can learn more about new benefit options for their employees at the Wake Up to Small Business Breakfast on Wednesday, March 11 at the Double Tree Club and Hotel in Harrisburg. The program begins at 7:30 a.m. and is sponsored by AFLAS, a number one provider of voluntary employee benefits worldwide, insuring 40 million people.

Some of the questions to be explored include: What kind of health care packages are right for employees, how to expand benefits to employees without incurring any cost, helping my employees who have child care expenses without added expense to the business, and how to offer voluntary benefits and save payroll taxes at the same time.

International Business Seminar

Elizabethtown, PA – The Center for Continuing Education at Elizabethtown College will be hosting an International Business Seminar Series. The series is designed to expose participants to the foundations of international business. Upon successful completion of the series a Certificate of Achievement is awarded.

International Finance will begin March 17 and run through April 2. International Management begins April 7 and runs through April 23. Introduction to Import/Export begins April 28 through May 14. Functioning in a Foreign Language Environment; Emphasizing Spanish begins June 2 through June 18. The seminars meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 – 9 p.m. The cost of the program is $550 for the series or $150 per seminar. Runners Needed for Chocolate Chase XX

Hershey, PA – The 20th annual Chocolate Chase, sponsored by students and the Office of Student Affairs at Penn State’s College of Medicine, will be held on Saturday, April 4, at noon. The Chocolate Chase is a 5-mile race beginning and ending at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and winding through the scenic, surrounding countryside. A one-mile Fun Run will be held afterwards.

Proceeds from the race will benefit a scholarship fund for medical students at the College of Medicine, located at Hershey Medical Center. To register, call 531-2000, enter mailbox number 3300 and leave a message with your name and address. The registration deadline is March 21.

 

Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Board Elects Vice Presidents

Hershey, PA – J. Bruce McKinney, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company, announced that the company’s Board of Directors elected David P. Lavery to the position of Vice President, chief financial officer, Secretary and Treasurer; and James C. Miles to the position of Vice President of the Hershey Resort and Commercial Groups.

A Great DesSert for a Great Cause

Contact helpline announces its 7th annual art auction

Harrisburg, PA - Contact Helpline will hold its Seventh Annual Art and Antique Auction March 21, at the Zembo Mosque in Harrisburg. Auction goers will enjoy food from the area's top restaurants and caterers, open bar, live jazz, beautiful art from the Heisman Gallery in Philadelphia and antiques from area dealers. The preview, reception and silent auction for antiques will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. WHTM evening anchor, Alicia Richards, will serve as this year's master of ceremonies and guest auctioneer. The art auction begins at 7 p.m.

The PinnacleHealth Web page offers information on its major clinical programs, including the Heart Institute, Regional Cancer Center, WomanCare, Primary Care Program, Behavioral Services, Home Care and Hospice, Residency Program and more.

The home page also features a number of health quizzes to provide visitors up-to-the-minute information on living a healthier lifestyle. The Jellybricks Headline Charity Fundraising Event for the Special Olympics

Harrisburg, PA – Local band the Jellybricks will headline a Special Olympics event presented by the Entertainment and Sport Law Society of Widener University and sponsored in part by The Multistate Bar Review Specialists.

The opening band will be the Pat McGuire Band, an alternative outfit which recently performed on the Conan O’Brien Show and is currently being considered for Saturday Night Live. They will be followed by Karl Shuman Y New Day Shine, who formerly toured with The Dave Mathews Band and the Spindoctors. The headline band will be Harrisburg’s own Jellybricks, winners of last year’s Pop Fest, earning them the opening slot for last fall’s Live concert, which in turn generated extensive media coverage, including mentions in MTV Music News, Billboard and Spin Magazine.

The show is slated for March 21st, the doors open at 5 p.m. and show will start at 8 p.m. Tickets are $6 at the door and the event is for those 21 and older. It will be held at the Classic Q Sports Bar located directly behind Chi Chi’s. Call 561-4414 for information.

 

Juice Bar Opens in Hummelstown Farmer’s Market

Hummelstown, PA – The Harrisburg area finally has a juice bar to call its own. Jude Ann LaVia has opened the area’s first juice bar in the Old Factory Farmer’s Market and Café on February 5. American Cancer Society Holds 25th Annual Daffodil Days

Harrisburg, PA – The daffodil is the symbol of hope for the American Cancer Society – hope that cancer can be cured in our lifetime. Each March the society brings thousands of daffodils into the area. Over 1,000 volunteers are mobilized through months of planning to take orders for and coordinated the delivery of over 400,000 daffodils, which will arrive the week of March 16 – 22.

Community sales sites will be at local malls and businesses the week of Daffodil Days so that those who have not pre-ordered flowers can get a bunch. They are available in bunches of 10 for a $5 donation.

This event will raise over $160,000 and touch thousands of lives. To order daffodils or find the community sales site nearest to you, contact your local American Cancer Society at 231-5780 or 888-227-5445.

Feed the Needy – Bring Canned Goods to Disney on Ice

Hershey, PA – Feld Entertainment and Hersheypark Arena invite you to "Be Our Guest" and help feed the needy of Central Pennsylvania by donating food at any performance of Disney on Ice – Beauty and the Beast. The show plays from March 11-15.
