Midtown Neighborhood In Search Of New Businesses

Harrisburg, PA – Sushi Restaurant Wanted! The Midtown Market District (MMD) is moving forward with a focused Business Recruiting effort. Ethnic & health restaurants top the list of selected business opportunities in the district. Other distinctive retail operations and services desired include: antique shop, unique apparel, sporting goods, a new and used CD and book store, a European-style bakery, copy and mailing services, and alternative medicine (like acupuncture & chiropractic).

The goal of MMD is to create a collection of uncommon retail and service locations that attract regional and local attention. The approach they are using to attract and serve customers is called clustering and is designed to strengthen the overall business position by locating complimentary businesses near one another. For example, those who shop for fine art, crafts and antiques also tend to patronize gourmet coffee shops and fine dining establishments.

The Midtown District is located within walking distance of the Capitol complex and is centered around North Third Street, between Forster and Reily Streets.

For more information about business opportunities and investment incentives contact Martha McGraw, Executive Director MMD, at (717) 221-8134.

Amish Documentary to Premier on WITF-TV

Harrisburg, PA – A new public television documentary on the Amish of Lancaster County will premiere on WITF-TV, on Wednesday, November 5, and Sunday, November 9, at 10 p.m. "The Amish and Us," deals with the pressure that the flood of tourists and the loss of farmland in Lancaster County are putting on the Amish community.

Four and a half million tourists visited Lancaster county last year. The cash these visitors spend on quilts, lawn ornaments, wooden toys, baked goods, and other Amish-made products is a boon to Amish families that cannot afford to make it by farming alone anymore. At the same time, the ready cash brought by the tourist trade and the constant contact with outsiders threaten to erode the traditional values that are the foundation of the Amish way of life.

Filmmaker Dirk Eitzen, says that the reason he started making this film was to prod tourists to see their own behavior in the way they typically see the Amish, as curious and a bit odd.
