Up: Bean Me Up Scotty by Frank Pizzoli Coffee beans - and now cocoa - are brewing bright futures. Bean prices have nearly doubled, recently, grinding Mocha Java into dollars for investors. So whats the scoop? More and more, office workers reject mundane office brew in favor of fancy brands and flavors (like Macadamia Nut, Leather & Lace and Mint Spice). Over the course of the past four years, office coffee consumption has dropped three percent annually. Although general coffee consumption outside the home has fallen steadily in the last decade, there is no need to despair. Consumers are drinking fewer cups of cheaper brew in favor of increasingly drinking over-the-counter brews and purchasing higher priced beans. So, coffee purchases outside the office have increased 18 percent in the last two years. This has been a tremendous boost to coffee retailers in downtown business districts. Obviously, there must be tangible profits attached to this trend. The Harrisburg Hiltons sidewalk deli recently added Starbucks beverages to its menu. Did you know that coffee ranks first among foods most often consumed or mentioned on prime-time television? Did you know that in a recent year H&R Block offices used 16 gallons of ink during the tax season and 2.2 million gallons of coffee? |
