Brewhouse Specialties

by Ed Yashinsky

The three Harrisburg area breweries each produce distinct beer styles and regularly introduce new varieties. Here’s a little information about some of their current house specialties:

The Firehouse Brew Pub

Cherry Ale features two kinds of cherries, five different grains, three hop varieties and a hint of coriander. It is mildly bitter with a cherry nose, pale pink head and a long-remembered cherry taste.

Cocoa Porter comes from a recipe developed in their brewmaster’s kitchen. It consists of six high-quality grains, two of England’s best noble hops and a "kiss" from a favorite cocoa supplier.

Appalachian Brewing Company

Water Gap Wheat is a light and refreshing wheat beer that is sure to delight the palette. Their special yeast and a blend of malted and unmalted wheats provide the haze in this unfiltered style ale. A wedge of lemon usually accompanies this beer style.

Purest Pale Ale is a light copper pale ale with a delicate malt attribute which is balanced by an aggressive hop flavor and aroma. Many American micros have developed their own version of this classic English style beer.

Tröeg’s Brewery

Tröeg’s Pale Ale is unlike any other traditional ale. It is brewed with Belgian malts, top-fermenting yeast and Northwest Cascade hops to create a malty, copper-colored, crisp ale with a citrusy, floral aroma.

Tröeg’s ESB (Extra Special Bitter) is dry hopped in the old world tradition. Crystal malts are added to ensure a complex, malty, aromatic amber ale. Tröeg’s ESB is then fermented with a special yeast strain that recreates the traditional fruity-malty bitter.
