Cheap Lunch with Betty

Athens Diner
5510 Carlisle Pike
Mechanicsburg, PA 17055
717-795-9068
Open 7 days, 24 hours

Here’s a diner where you don’t have to wait until dinner to get a large well-balanced meal for lunch. However, before you can enjoy your meal, you’ll have to look over the regular menu (the size of a short book), the Daily Special menu insert, plus the daily specials listed on the board. But once you’re past that, you can be assured of fast service and a satisfying meal. Mike and Penelope Livaditis work hard at making just about everything from scratch- you won’t find any pre-frozen meals here. Knowing this, I decided to try the home-baked meatloaf special. For $4.95, you get your choice of soup or salad, two vegetables, and ice tea or coffee. I enjoyed a garden salad and mashed potatoes and applesauce to accompany the 4 slices of meatloaf with gravy. I had more than I could eat and drink- since refills are always free. My friend ordered the chicken gyro special served with fries, your choice of soup or salad, and ice tea or coffee. The chicken is prepared in the same traditional way as veal gyros- including onions and a cool cucumber sauce wrapped in a soft pita. Lunch specials are available from 11am til 3:00pm. From the regular menu, you can get a sandwich or burger, a side dish or fries and a drink for under five bucks.

The Old Original Jackson House
1004 North Sixth Street
Harrisburg (midtown)
717-238-2730
Open Monday through Friday
10:30am until 2:00pm

Harrisburg certainly has its fair share of small, burger and sub joints scattered about the downtown region. On Sixth Street you will find one of the best- Jackson House. The food is prepared fresh each day and the portions are more than generous. For around $5.00, you can take your pick from a huge menu featuring South Philly steaks, hoagies and burgers.

If you’re in the mood for a great burger, try the Jackson Burger- which comes with melted cheese, smoked bacon, lettuce tomato and their special sauce. At $3.95, you won’t leave hungry! In addition, try any of the South Philly Steaks. Again, the portions are very generous and the food is great. Prices range from $3.75 to $4.50.

Jackson House is only open weekdays for lunch, 10:20am – 2:00pm, and there is always a crowd. They even offer free delivery with a $15 minimum order. While the décor is certainly not elegant, the dining area is clean and suitable for a quick meal, or informal business lunch Jackson House is definitely worth checking out for lunch!
