Publisher’s Note - March 1997

What a wonderful life!
Don’t ya just love it when things go real smoooooooth. I’m referring to two great events in which MODE was privileged to be engaged. The first being the Celebrity Bartender Night at J.C. Dunphy’s, where MODE raised $202 for Delta Housing, and the second the American Lung Association’s Breathless Singles Night and Auction, where I’m told well over $10,000 was raised. Thank you Daryl Dissinger and Nathan Mains for letting MODE be an active partner in your efforts.

DO NOT neglect to read this month’s One Tank Getaway to Annville, PA. Not only is it a departure from our regular format, but it seems like one of the coolest weekend retreats I’ve heard about in a long time. That’s a stylized photo of the Allen Theater on the cover, and from what our author Mitchell Hillman Jr. and his significant other Julie Neff say, it’s a must-experience. The Swatara Creek Inn is having a Murder Mystery weekend later this year and the boss and I are goin’ for sure.

About last month’s reader poll. The real juicy question was ‘which was more important to an employee, subsidized medical coverage or two weeks of paid vacation.’ The response was overwhelming for ‘medical coverage’, as we expected. Other conclusions reached were: Of the MODE readers who responded, the average number of times they eat out a month is 6, their favorite section in MODE hovers between AGENDA and my column, (yea!), and the section they would most like to see MUST have a business-to-business theme. Keep your eyes out for a column of just that sort coming soon. We listen and obey.

Say, if MODE was producing an Illustrated Map of Harrisburg, to debut at the July 4th celebration on City Island, and you were in charge of what went on the map and how, would you put the whole Walnut Street Bridge, or just what’s there at the time of the making of the map? YOU THE READERS WILL DECIDE! See page 8 of this issue if you are interested in putting your business on the map, (proceeds from sales go to Delta Housing... again.)

Also, if MODE was hosting a FREE seminar for small business owners and management professionals that presented professional advertising and marketing information in a fashion that was digestible and usable, would you attend? Well we are, and we’re doing it because of two people... and you know who you are! Actually this is a seminar that has been presented annually for 5 years now, and is considered quite successful in several cities. Attendees will be shown how to evaluate their current advertising and marketing plans, and plan for the future strategically and cost effectively. Topics like using technology, fostering creative thinking and media buying will be covered. Guest speakers from across the county are scheduled to appear. Entitled A&M101, this seminar will be FREE by RSVP only, and there is limited seating so if you need this kind of concentrated help, call today. (It won’t be free next year.)

“Will the publisher of the real MODE, please stand up!”

You might be hearing this more often than you think in the coming months. It seems that March 1st, 1997 marks the day that, coincidentally, another MODE hits the newsstands. (Gee, the name is catching on, isn’t it?) So it seems a glossy, nationally distributed magazine, also called Mode makes it’s debut this month. Catering to large size women, 12, 14, 16..., it appears to be a polished, and well authored publication. Silly that they didn’t think to ask me if I minded before they started using the name MODE, isn’t it? Especially since I’ve been using it nationally and internationally for years. Hmmmmm.

Because anyone who reads “this” MODE with any consistency knows that we focus on the positive not on the negative, I wanted to let you all know that I am well aware of that “other” Mode, and can’t wait to sit down and chat with them. :-)

TTFN.
