Christmas Classics

by Dan Mohn, Movie Merchants

I have a lot of fun with this movie. I know it’s not going to be to everyone’s liking, but I’m always trying to talk people into renting it. To me, it was one of those films that keeps growing on you the longer you watch it. The story line has been done before and there really are no high profile actors or actresses in it. Oh, you might have seen them in other notable films, but nothing that they could carry on their own. What makes this film so interesting is that it takes place in a place like North Dakota or Minnesota. The local accents are great and it adds a certain flavor to the movie. Now, some people have a problem with the accents because they speak very slowly and are very short with conversation.

Not exactly what some people are looking for in a thriller, the story taking place in this remote town in the dead of winter makes for an interesting film. To give a little background information on the movie, a local trying to make some quick money decides to have someone kidnap his wife, hoping that his wealthy father-in-law will pay the ransom. He then would split the ransom money with the would-be kidnappers. Well, nothing goes as planned and some people are killed. Now, everyone is trying to save their own behinds as the local authorities are closing in.-well, as fast as the local authorities in Fargo can go. It’s like watching the old TV show ,"COLUMBO", except everybody reacts about as quickly as Peter Falk. I have heard that Frances McDormand might be nominated for an Oscar for her performance as the chief of police who’s in about her eighth month of pregnancy. This movie does have some violent scenes in it, so, the squeamish,, beware. As for the rest of you, I suggest you give "FARGO" a try.

How about one for the girls? Well, I liked this movie, also, so, maybe it’s for the guys, as well. Everybody has that little trace of fear when it’s time to go back home to see old friends for your 10th year high school class reunion. Well, that’s what this movie is all about, old friends getting together to remember all the great times they had. Secret crushes are revealed and friendships are rekindled. This movie has a great cast in it. Matt Dillon, Timothy Hutton, Rosie O’Donnell, Marie Sorvino, and Uma Thurman star in this comedy that sometimes feels like a drama. The story covers the driven boy who moved away to the big city and is unsure why he’s going back to the small town, the guy who got married at too young an age, and the bad boy who just remained the bad boy. The girls also have their own stories to tell: the wild one who is always looking for a good time and teasing the boys while she’s at it, the girl who is trying to get out of a relationship and having a tough time doing so, and Rosie, as the loud, feisty one who sticks up for her friends. The movie reveals the tough times of young people trying to get a foothold in the world. It’s a feel good movie that takes you back to the time when you had to make that decision as to which way you wanted your life to go. So, sit back with a friend and remember those good days while watching "BEAUTIFUL GIRLS".

While the weather outside is frightful, a movie can make it delightful. I just finished setting up our Christmas section and boy, are there a lot of films to choose from. One of my favorite has to be "MIRACLE ON 34th STREET." I prefer the black and white version, but it is also available in color. Some of the classics that are available this year are WHITE CHRISTMAS, HOLIDAY INN, and IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE. For the kids, in case they miss them during their regular TV showing, most of the cartoon classics are out on video. RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER, FROSTY THE SNOWMAN, FROSTY RETURNS, HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS, and THE YEAR WITHOUT A SANTA CLAUS. So, if you need a little holiday cheer, stop by your favorite video store and I’m sure they can show you to their holiday section.
