THE GODFATHER TRILOGY

by Dan Mohn, Movie Merchants

Sometimes, no matter how many times you walk by a certain title, you will never rent that movie. Maybe it’s the box art or maybe it’s the title of the movie. Sometimes you just get the wrong impression of a title and you tend to forget about it. The best advise I can give to someone who is in a video store is to ask someone who is working there about their thoughts on a particular title. Most of the time that person can enlighten you on that title and also might be able to recommend another title that might be to your liking.

The movie THREE WISHES was recommended to me by a part-time employee at of all places, my own store. I had been looking for a good family film in the new release section and by chance I just happened to ask the employee working what she would rent. Without hesitation she went over to THREE WISHES and told me that my family and I would really enjoy the film. I knew THREE WISHES had been out on video for some time but it had not been doing well renting. Like everybody else, I tagged the movie as a bad film and never thought twice about renting it. So I took my employee’s advise and took the film home. I was very pleased with this film. I have enjoyed most of Patrick Swayze’s films and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio has always been a favorite actress of mine. Without giving away too much about the film, the story is about a family growing up without a father who was lost during wartime. The family takes in a dog and his owner (Swayze) when he is hit by the family vehicle by accident. The film is about the blessing’s one receives when you open your heart for someone. There are also two kids that star in the movie who are trying to cope with growing up without a father. They make it interesting for the kids at home so that everybody can enjoy the film. So, if your looking for a good family film, give THREE WISHES a chance.

Trying to write a review about a B title science fiction movie has become quite a task. I could easily write a bad review about a sci-fi B film because there are so many of them. But finding a good film is tough. I lucked out on this one. Just recently a sci-fi film was released that was killed at the box office because of INDEPENDENCE DAY’S great success. The film THE ARRIVAL is really not a B title but because a lot of people missed this film in theater, I thought it would be a great film to review. Charlie Sheen stars in this
sci-fi thriller that comes off like an episode of the X-files. Has an alien invasion taken place without anyone knowing the wiser? Zane Zamindky (Charlie Sheen) may have some proof that it has taken place but forces will do anything to make sure that this information does not leak out. It’s another one of those films that your not quite sure who everyone is and who’s side they are actually on. The aliens are creatively done and the confrontation between Charlie Sheen’s character and the aliens is intense. INDEPENDENCE DAY will not be out until November 22nd so if you need a good sci-fi fix, THE ARRIVAL should do the trick.

It’s hard to believe that THE GODFATHER was made almost 25 years ago. Whenever someone rents a mobster movie, it seems that it is always compared to this classic Oscar winner. It’s hard hitting and graphic scenes are the mold to most action, hard dramas, and mobster movies even today. The trilogy is always a consistent rental throughout the year and it is always a good topic of conversation. Everybody has a different favorite part of the film and getting them excited to talk about it is pretty easy. Now I know that some people were not that excited about THE GODFATHER III but for quality entertainment, this series is tough to beat.
