Career Doctor Dear Career Doctor,
Is there a correct "uniform" for my job search? I am a 2-year college graduate
in a business setting, at a low-mid level of management.

Dear Anthony,
The clothing we wear at an interview has a lasting effect on the entire course of the
interview...so it has to be right. The first rule: never overdress... If you look better
than the interviewer, youre in deep trouble.
Generally speaking, a 2-peice business suit is ideal, for both men and women. Sport
jackets, styles that are overly stylish, or colors that are far too bright...just
wont do for the interview. The classic navy blue suit is very good, but dont
feel restricted to that color. The old myth that certain colors will damn the interview
and job offer just isnt so. A white shirt, medium width tie and basic dark shoe
complement the suit look. For men, no handkerchief in the breast pocket, and no excessive
jewelry. A crisp, clean look (and a well-trimmed hairstyle) are essential.
An "organizer" (like a mini-briefcase) carried into the interview...is the final
touch. Use it (along with a complete outline of the interview sequence youll like to
follow, if you can) to promote that professional look and to keep important notes during
the interview. The way you look is as critical as the verbal communication. Good Luck!
